In the bestselling tradition of Inside of a Dog and Marley & Me, a smart, illuminating, and entertaining read on why the dog-human relationship is unique--and possibly even "spiritual." Dr. Andrew Root's search for the canine soul began the day his eight-year-old son led the family in a moving Christian ritual at the burial service for Kirby, their beloved black lab. In the coming weeks, Root found himself wondering: What was this thing we'd experienced with this animal? Why did the loss hurt so poignantly? Why did his son's act seem so right in its sacramental feel? In The Grace of Dogs, Root draws on biology, history, theology, cognitive ethology (the study of animal minds), and paleontology to trace how in our mutual evolution, humans and dogs have so often helped each other to become more fully ourselves. Root explores questions like: Do dogs have souls? Is it accurate to say that dogs "love" us? What do psychology and physiology say about why we react to dogs in the way that we do? The Grace of Dogs paints a vivid picture of how, beyond sentimentality, the dog-human connection can legitimately be described as "spiritual"--as existing not for the sake of gain, but for the unselfish desire to be with and for the other, and to remind us that we are persons worthy of love and able to share love. In this book for any parent whose kids have asked if they'll see Fido in Heaven, or who has looked their beloved dog in the face and wondered what's going on in there, Dr. Root delivers an illuminating and heartfelt read that will change how we understand man's best friend.

Thom Baron has been struggling with social anxiety his entire life. He's taken the medications, gone to the therapists, followed the programs, and concluded his best life is a solitary one. When he comes across a dog in obvious need at his local market, it rekindles the desire to have some company around. It may come with a dishevelled coat, a notched ear, and a refusal to respond to anything but its given name "Ugly," but it could still be a friend. However, Thom's new fur buddy has no such need to keep to itself and immediately befriends the man Thom has secretly coveted since he moved in -- Justin, Thom's gorgeous, bright-eyed neighbour. No matter how Thom tries to evade the man, the dog keeps drawing them back into each other's lives, and it doesn't take Thom long to recognize it's simply pursuing the demands of Thom's own heart. With the dog giving him the courage to try, Thom reaches out to return the love being offered. Until a stranger shows up insisting the dog is his and demanding its immediate return ... a loss Thom knows will take all of his efforts and newfound confidence with it.

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: Behold, thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, even upon a colt the foal of an ass” (Zech. 9.9 and quoted in Matt. 21.5). Matthew the first Evangel presents to us Christ as the King, the One who at His first coming some two thousand years ago came incognito in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. The world in general did not and does not know Him, nor will it accept Him; but to those to whom the heavenly Father reveals the Son, this Jesus of Nazareth is the Anointed One of God. And hence the purpose of the King’s coming to the world, as is shown by this Evangel, is to gather to himself a people in whom by the Spirit of God He can build a kingdom that is not of this world but which is of heaven. But Matthew also shows us that the church has been taught to pray, “Thy kingdom come” (6.10), indicating that the King is coming once again! He intends to manifest publicly His kingdom on earth. At the appointed hour the King will indeed return; and then will come true what is told in Revelation, that “the kingdom of the world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ: and he shall reign for ever and ever” (11.15). So that this Evangel perceives the gospel of Jesus Christ in its fullest sense as being the gospel of the King. We will not have a total gospel if we fail to recognize Jesus Christ as King and Lord of our very lives. Hence in the present volume, Watchman Nee leads us through the Gospel according to Matthew with this one theme in view—Jesus as King. The highlights are found in Matthew chapters 5-7 where the reality (or spiritual principles) of the kingdom of heaven is explained, in chapter 13 where the mysteries (or transient outward appearance) of this same kingdom are interpreted, and in chapters 24-25 where the coming (or final public manifestation) of the heavenly kingdom on earth is expounded. All who love the appearing of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords are encouraged to read this commentary that they may be better prepared to meet Him. May all be helped by these pages to understand the kingdom of heaven and to place themselves daily under the kingship of Christ Jesus the Lord.

Suppose for a moment that you are God, even if you don't believe in God or that there is any sentient intelligent life other than Human for that matter. And you as God decide, for one reason or another, that you are going to see to it that there should be life other than your own. By using your very Human logic and reason, why would you do it and how would you do it? By becoming a proxy for God and using your Human logic and reason you can maintain a Human perspective about this fundamental matter without resorting to a faith bound divine imperative. This then is the story of God and Goddess, the male and female manifestations of God and Alphan and Omegan, the male and female human like surrogates for God and Goddess. The surrogates where created for the expressed purpose of seeding basic mortal life throughout the universe and are an exceedingly advanced type of Human life that shares a common heritage with Mankind as the antecedent source of adaptive DNA. Ronald L Clark was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and is the father of four children. Most all of his professional years have been involved in design engineering for the United States Navy. He is the holder of a number of patents and was the Science and Technology leader at the Naval Air Warfare Center that featured a technical career that highlights System Engineering as the most rewarding of his technical endeavors. Written over a period of ten years by the poet, journalist, educator and clergyman, Vernon Schmid, Seven Days of the Dog centers around the John Lee Parker, a poet and journalist, called home in the summer dog days of Kansas for the funeral of his lifelong mentor and friend Blind Tom Harper. The author is a native of the region he writes about so he brings to the novel a feeling for the period, the climate, and the humanity. Within the seven days in which the novel takes place John Lee is confronted by the surprising news that the woman he loved as a teenager is now married to a violent, fundamentalist deputy sheriff. He is also surprised to learn that he is heir to Blind Toms forty acre farm on the outskirts of the village. His struggle to readapt himself to the community after years away in college and work as a journalist in Baltimore, Maryland, is made even more challenging by a series of revelations about his own Native American heritage, the peeling away of the superficiality hiding violence and hatred in the community, and the continuing mystical reappearance of Blind Tom. The oppressive heat, the news that Blind Tom was killed by a hit and run driver, his mothers strong and resilient presence in the midst of a community on the edge of disintegration, and the anchoring presence of Blind Toms spirit creates an atmosphere that is filled with humor, tension, passion, violence and murder. Anchoring much of the story are four old men, storytellers who recite the history and reality of the community with humor and the wisdom of ancient priests. They also involve themselves in the action of the story resulting in humor and arrest. The surprising turn of events as the week passes creates tension and laughter in the reader with an unexpected twist that culminates in a bloody and revelatory ending.

The poetic style and sweeping grandeur of The King of Elfland's Daughter has made it one of the most beloved fantasy novels of our time, a masterpiece that influenced some of the greatest contemporary fantasists. Life and Death of Richard Yea-and-Nay, The, by Maurice Hewlett (1900). A historical romance of the third Crusade. The story purports to be written by the Abbot Milo, confessor and friend of Richard Cœur de Lion called Richard Yea-and-Nay by Bertran de Born, the troubadour, because of the strange self-contradictions that mark this masterful ruler, “torn by two natures,” “sport of two fates,” “the loved and loathed,” “king and a beggar,” “god and man.” Jehane Saint-Pol is the beautiful girl he loves and wrongs. He renounced her saying Nay to his heart, but stole her back from before the altar of her marriage with another, saying Nay to his head. He crowned her Countess of Anjou, but repudiated the marriage when he becomes king, to make Berengère his queen in order to have her dowry to make his crusade to the Holy Land. He refused to be husband to the queen and was faithful to Jehane to the end. Jehane sacrifices all for the man she loves. She becomes a wife in the harem of the Old Man of Musse as the price of Richard’s life. Richard dies in Jehane’s arms, the romantic hero of chivalry. The pageant of this feudal age is reproduced in brilliant pictures.

Hailed as "a feast" (Washington Post) and "a modern-day bestiary" (The New Yorker), Stephen Asma's On Monsters is a wide-ranging cultural and conceptual history of monsters--how they have evolved over time, what functions they have served for us, and what shapes they are likely to take in the future. Beginning at the time of Alexander the Great, the monsters come fast and furious--Behemoth and Leviathan, Gog and Magog, Satan and his demons, Grendel and Frankenstein, circus freaks and headless children, right up to the serial killers and terrorists of today and the post-human cyborgs of tomorrow. Monsters embody our deepest anxieties and vulnerabilities, Asma argues, but they also symbolize the mysterious and incoherent territory beyond the safe enclosures of rational thought. Exploring sources as diverse as philosophical treatises, scientific notebooks, and novels, Asma unravels traditional monster stories for the clues they offer about the inner logic of an era's fears and fascinations. In doing so, he illuminates the many ways monsters have become repositories for those human qualities that must be repudiated, externalized, and defeated.
