"A dark, crooked beauty that fulfills all the promise of White Oleander and confirms that Janet Fitch is an artist of the very highest order." --Los Angeles Times Book Review Josie Tyrell, art model, runaway, and denizen of LA's rock scene finds a chance at real love with Michael Faraday, a Harvard dropout and son of a renowned pianist. But when she receives a call from the coroner, asking her to identify her lover's body, her bright dreams all turn to black. As Josie struggles to understand Michael's death and to hold onto the world they shared, she is both attracted to and repelled by his pianist mother, Meredith, who blames Josie for her son's torment. Soon the two women are drawn into a twisted relationship that reflects equal parts distrust and blind need. With the luxurious prose and fever pitch intensity that are her hallmarks, Janet Fitch weaves a spellbinding tale of love, betrayal, and the possibility of transcendence. "Lushly written, dramatically plotted. . . Fitch's Los Angeles is so real it breathes." --Atlantic Monthly "There is nothing less than a stellar sentence in this novel. Fitch's emotional honesty recalls the work of Joyce Carol Oates, her strychnine sentences the prose of Paula Fox." --Cleveland Plain Dealer "A page-turning psychodrama. . . . Fitch's prose penetrates the inner lives of [her characters] with immediacy and bite." --Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Fitch wonderfully captures the abrasive appeal of punk music, the bohemian, sometimes squalid lifestyle, the performers, the drugs, the alienation. This is crackling fresh stuff you don't read every day." --USA Today "In dysfunctional family narratives, Fitch is to fiction what Eugene O'Neill is to drama." --Chicago Sun-Times "Riveting. . . . An uncommonly accomplished page-turner." --Elle

“Should be unfailingly interesting to any Stones fan.”—Larry Rhoter, New York Times The Rolling Stones’ rise to fame is one of rock ‘n’ roll’s epic stories. Yet one crucial part of that story has never been fully told: the role of Brian Jones, the visionary who founded the band and meticulously controlled their early sound, only to be dethroned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Tormented by paranoia and drug problems, Jones drowned at the age of twenty-seven. Drawing on new information and interviews with Richards, Andrew Oldham, and Marianne Faithfull, among dozens of others, Brian Jones lays bare the Rolling Stones’ full story, in all its glory and squalor.

Goblins and Witches and Trolls . . . oh crap! In the fourth installment of The Black Knight Chronicles, Jimmy Black is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day and a darned fine pity party, serving the finest alcohol, when a call from his not-quite-girlfriend-cop forces him to sober up and stare at jawbones. "Cold case" takes on a whole new meaning when vampire detectives risk life and limbs (literally) to connect a series of decades-old kidnappings in Charlotte with current missing persons cases. All clues lead through the veil of Faerieland to the legendary Goblin's Market, a magical bazaar where anything is available--for a price. The boys can barely stay out of trouble in Charlotte. As fresh meat at The Market, they'll be lucky to survive the day. John G. Hartness is a recovering theatre geek who likes loud music, fried pickles, and cold beer. He's also an award-winning poet, lighting designer, and theatre producer whose work has been translated into over twenty-five languages and read worldwide. John lives in North Carolina with his lovely wife Suzy.

‘Ask me to paint anything you wish and I will try no matter how specific or surreal your demands. You name it. I’ll paint it. On Paint.’ Jim has painted some truly unhinged requests – from ‘Kanye West giving birth to himself’ and 'Ross Kemp on toast' to 'A swan wearing Björk as a dress' and ‘Bill Oddie beating Hitler at Catchphrase’ – each brought to life with painstaking detail using nothing but an archaic version of Microsoft Paint and an optical mouse. Many have since become beloved icons of British internet culture, such as ‘The chestburster scene from Alien portrayed by famous TV puppets’ and the infamous 'Tory Squat Party'. Of Mouse and Man is the very best of Jim’s first five years of work alongside never-before-seen material and unique insights into his creative process.

With shades of Charles Portis, Cormac McCarthy and Flannery O’Connor, this is a gothic western transferred to the ice-locked wilds of upstate New York at the turn of the 20th century; a brutal and searing debut novel about a mother’s obsession and a son’s search for answers in the wake of a terrible and violent tragedy. In the winter of 1897, midwife Elspeth Howell returns to her isolated farmstead to find her husband and four of her five children murdered. Before she discovers her remaining son, Caleb, alive and hiding in the kitchen pantry, she is shot. Caleb nurses his mother back to health, cleaning her wounds and keeping her fed, before he and Elspeth leave their home to seek retribution from the men who committed this heinous crime. As they travel from country to town to hunt the murderers, the reader learns of Elspeth’s deep secret--that she kidnapped the very children who call her mother--and questions her role in the novel’s initial violence. Meanwhile Caleb is confronted with the ways of a world he’s never known. The line between justice and vengeance is thrown into question as Caleb and Elspeth are forced to reconsider their relationship and what unknown future lies ahead for both of them. The Kept is a portrait of both maternal obsessions and a primal adolescence in a brutal world. Fans of True Grit’s Mattie Ross and All the Pretty Horses’s Jimmy Blevins will love Caleb Howell, the next great old-beyond-his-years protaganist of an unforgettable literary Western--this time set in the icy wilderness of the East Coast.

Hier war ein Meister am Werk gewesen, ein wahrer Könner seines Fachs. Der junge Mann stand wie angewurzelt da. This book is a self-reflection exercise designed to help readers overcome challenging problems through the use of specific problem solving techniques. In the introduction we learn about decision-making strategies that work in situations of uncertainty and we learn scenario planning - a technique invented in the 1960's for the US Dept. of Defense, later adapted for use in the private sector. Each of the seven practical cases listed comprehend a short explanation of the context, a stated objective and a story. Each story is summarized and at the end of the chapter there is a guided self-reflection questionnaire to help the reader adapt the story to a specific problem they want to solve, followed by an exercise. For example the seventh story – "Pick a musical instrument or let the instrument pick you" – is the inspiration for the title of this book. The story is the journey of a young musician trying to find a way to express himself through music. The problem on hand is to pick one instrument over another, so either a guitar or a bass. The story presents two powerful instruments for self-discovery: the experiential approach and futuring. In the experiential approach the musician is presented with each instrument, one at a time, and after each interaction the observer records how the musician felt. Futuring involves presenting the musician with different situations using videos and then asking the musician which person they identify with in each case. It is important to note as adults, we have the added responsibility to exhibit positive behaviors – we must share our experience so that hopefully those who come after us will learn from our mistakes. The goal of the seventh story is to help us conduct a similar exercise, making better choices and more enlightened decisions. The first story – "Buying a House" - helps us consider the two most influential macro-economic variables present in the purchasing of a house: inflation and unemployment. The second story – "A Life Changing Investment" – posts the challenge for us to decide between two good alternatives. In the third story – "Where to Live" – we follow the journey of a person trying to decide on a place to live, but the alternatives are in dramatically different places and cultures. The fourth story – "Cousin Sophie's Wedding" – is a situation with various deeply ingrained conflicts. The fifth story – "El Otro Lado" – describes the challenges a potential immigrant faces in the process of deciding to come to the United States or staying put where they are. The sixth story – "Aunt Angie Turns 100!" – presents a conflict with a person we could not otherwise avoid and therefore need to develop a coping strategy. In each story the challenges are real life problems involving characters we encounter on a daily basis and living through situations we cannot leave unattended, rather they require immediate attention and the use of good strategies to help us become more successful. This is not a "feel good" type of book, rather it is written with the intent to guide the reader through a series of seven self-reflection exercises designed to challenge and push us to overcome each specific challenge with the help of a decision-making technique. In other words, the reader is expected to actively use the exercises to find solutions to problems, and not to behave like a passive audience. Keywords: Self-Help, Problem Solving, Decision-Making, Uncertainty, Risk Mitigation, Strategy, Personal Problems, Challenges

Arthur Black’s best lines are like a shot of whisky—sharp, invigorating and with a good kick. Following the success of his many previous titles, the multiple-award-winning humorist once again delivers “black-to-black” laughs with his latest collection, Paint the Town Black. With his usual off-kilter perspective, Black tackles many of the pressing topics of the day, including some positive PR for the swastika, the sometimes fatal effects of poor penmanship and the burning question of whether one-time Thunder Bay mayor Walter “Jolly Wally” Assef really did pat the queen’s bum. The answer: “Somebody must have tipped Prince Philip off about the mayor’s meandering mitts because Phil watched Wally like a hawk. Wally’s hands never got near the royal end zone.” Many edifying historical facts are cunningly hidden among the laughs. For instance, how many Canadians remember Gerda Munsinger, the probable Soviet spy who got deported for sleeping her way through half of Diefenbaker’s cabinet? And then there’s Senator Incitatus, whose office was made of marble and who literally ate gold for lunch. Don’t worry, this isn’t one of Harper’s recent appointees—Incitatus was a racehorse appointed to the Roman senate by his owner, Emperor Caligula. So settle into your favourite chair, pour yourself a shot of something strong and get ready to Paint the Town Black.

A comprehensive, critical and accessible account of Theodor W. Adorno's materialist-dialectical aesthetic theory of art from a contemporary perspective, this volume shows how Adorno's critical theory is awash with images crystallising thoughts to such a degree that it has every reason to be described as aesthetic.
