A dazzling group biography of the early twentieth-century thinkers who transformed the way the world thought about math and science Inspired by Albert Einstein's theory of relativity and Bertrand Russell and David Hilbert's pursuit of the fundamental rules of mathematics, some of the most brilliant minds of the generation came together in post-World War I Vienna to present the latest theories in mathematics, science, and philosophy and to build a strong foundation for scientific investigation. Composed of such luminaries as Kurt Gö and Rudolf Carnap, and stimulated by the works of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Karl Popper, the Vienna Circle left an indelible mark on science. Exact Thinking in Demented Times tells the often outrageous, sometimes tragic, and never boring stories of the men who transformed scientific thought. A revealing work of history, this landmark book pays tribute to those who dared to reinvent knowledge from the ground up.

Iris McGivern never envisioned spending her twenties locked up in a psychiatric hospital, but there she is. Stuck with bad food, rude staff, and rules, rules, rules. The place is interminably dull. At least, it is until the murders start. Oh, sure, management claims the deaths are accidents, but Iris knows better. How? Because she can speak to the victims. Newly qualified psychiatrist Marcus Hastings never aspired to work in a secure unit, but his rent won't pay itself. And he hates to back away from a challenge, even if that challenge is a delusional blonde who talks to birds, squirrels, and occasionally thin air. Fascinating, in a purely clinical sense, of course. When fate throws them together, will Iris escape with her life? And will Marcus escape with his sanity? Demented is a standalone paranormal romantic suspense novel in the Electi series. Keywords: Contemporary, Doctor, Enemies to lovers, Found family, Ghosts, Humor, Magical realism, Murder, Mystery, Necromancer, Paranormal, PNR, Private investigator, Romantic suspense, Strong woman, Supernatural, Suspense, Vigilante justice.

Born. Live. Die. That simple? No. You’re born, an infant dependent for sustenance on others. Grow old, you are fed and clothed and cleaned and put to sleep. But not for all. Some die young. Others live long in decent health until the end. Not everyone grows feeble. Most do. Old age, hospitals, nurses, doctors, psychologists, social workers, rehab specialists, health aides, nursing homes, a panorama. Experts everywhere and a myriad of medical foot soldiers following. Bills everywhere for thousands spewed out. Confusion. The family. What to do? Who to trust? How to afford? Action! Determination! Institutionalization! Worries. Dilemmas. Legal issues too. A Power of Attorney? A Will? Property? Final decisions made by who? Disagreements. Greed. Lawyers. Courts. What becomes of the life of an old woman when it’s constructed on lies and dysfunction like Eloise Tarikie’s life. Tragedy is ensured. How sad, but it can provide this lesson: Beware before it is too late.

Author Nicholas Andrefsky never envisioned that he would one day be a caregiver. Nothing in his life prepared him for that daunting task, but he was in need of money and his dearest friend on the planet asked for his help. Caring for Mary documents the ups and downs of his time as a caregiver to the strong-willed Mary as she struggled with dementia. Mary was no pushover, but Nick took a unique approach to understanding her needs. They bonded, and she came to view him as a trusted ally instead of an enemy. He recalls several different scenarios that occurred as he cared for Mary, complete with straightforward, occasionally humorous, and always honest in the assessment of how to handle each situation. His message is that you must understand that the person for whom you are caring will not change, that the best way to work with them is with humor and understanding, allowing them to maintain their dignity. Being a caregiver is not easy, but it can be rewarding when handled in the right way. Dementia is not reversible, and it grows progressively worse as time wears on. Even so, there are glimmers of recognition and humor, both of which come shining through in these winning stories.

In the pretty Devonshire town of Dartcross an elderly lady diarist struggles with her memory to write a history of her colourful past, her hateful cat and her murderous husband. At the same time, Janet Bretherton and her friend Belle try to discover a purpose to their retirement. Is it enough to discuss the latest novels in their readers’ group, go to the theatre or attend a séance? Perhaps, instead, they should try to solve the mystery of the dead Polish man whose body is found by the river? The Demented Lady Detectives’ Club is both a whodunit and a funny yet poignant account of a group of women growing old and seeking love and meaning in both the past and the present. The unnamed lady diarist finally faces up to the horror she has buried in her memory and the love she has lost. And Janet has to deal with the tender feelings she is still capable of evoking in a man who is twenty years her junior.

Words of a Demented Wiseman is a laugh-out-loud satire cascading with a mastery of wordplay and author Rodney Wicks' unique humor. This ferocious, bombastic novel highlights race, identity, and the power of words, categorizing nations and its descendants before you can even pop open your mouth. It is those subtleties and nuances of the spoken words of a language, which can change your reality to something unreal, while confirming that reality of the person wearing a uniform, a gun and a badge but who is paid to protect you! Racism? Profiling? Or both? BMHJ fled America after being last seen leaving the Red Elephant bar with Nikki Johnson, whose body was later found with her throat slashed, stabbed 48 times and a $50 bill protruded from her vagina. And, of course, the condemning evidence, her DNA from her blood was all over his clothes. How could he explain? Hiding out in a French psychiatric clinic, he figured they wouldn't look for a murder suspect there. Rodney Wicks, language trainer by default and founder of the language school AAAL by chance, has been residing in France since 1982. The first-time novelist brings together his lyrical talent and his delightful madness, all the while inserting historical left-outs on both sides of the Atlantic. While in search of the answer to the question: "Is no longer being afraid of those who are paid to protect you, a step closer to equality?" he wrote Words of a Demented Wiseman. He is still in search and still writing.

A public restroom even more horrific than most, with a stained toilet that can swallow a man whole, sending him to a sewage-filled hell. A riverbank lined with swaying mops given faces and philosophies. A secondary school that seems to waver in and out of reality not only in dreams, but also upon wakeful visitation. An isolated grotto, home to trolls and the posthumous shadow form of Elvis Presley. These are all settings of peculiar, often unnerving events in How Not to Kill Yourself author Set Sytes’s collection of short bizarro fiction. It features the longer story “The School of Necromancy,” in which a school buried deep in the Catacombs of York teaches subjects much less innocent than math or language arts.

Adult cognitive development is one of the most important yet most neglected aspects in the study of human psychology. Although the development of cognition and intelligence during childhood and adolescence is of great interest to researchers, educators, and parents, many assume that this development stops progressing in any significant manner when people reach adulthood. In fact, cognition and intelligence do continue to progress in very significant ways. In this second edition of Developmental Influences on Adult Intelligence, K. Warner Schaie presents the history, latest data, and results from the Seattle Longitudinal Study (SLS). The purpose of the SLS is to study various aspects of psychological development during the adult years. Initiated in 1956 and focusing on a random sample of 500 adults ranging in age from 25 to 95 years old, the SLS is organized around five questions: Does intelligence change uniformly throughout adulthood, or are there different life-course-ability patterns? At what age and at what magnitude can decrement in ability be reliably detected? What are the patterns and magnitude of generational differences? What accounts for individual differences in age-related change in adulthood? Can the intellectual decline that increases with age be reversed by educational intervention? The first edition of the book provided an account of the SLS through the 1998 (seventh wave) data collection and of the associated family study through the 1996 (second wave) data collection. Since that time, Schaie and his collaborators have conducted several additional data collections. These include a further longitudinal follow-up in 2005/06, a longitudinal follow-up and 3rd data collection for the family study in 2003/04, and acquisition of a 3rd generation sample in 2002. Hence, virtually all of the content from the first edition has been updated and expanded, and three new chapters are included on Health Behaviors and Intellectual Functioning, Biological Influences on Cognitive Change, and Prediction of Individual Cognitive Decline. This new edition is a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners specializing in adult development, aging, and adult education, as well as students and faculty in developmental, cognitive, and social psychology, psychiatry, nursing, social work, and the social sciences interested in issues of human aging.
